EN Car customisation spawns $265m industry

THE Singaporean love affair with the car, coupled with the desire to stand out from the crowd, has been fuelling a booming aftermarket tuning and customisation industry here.

While no official statistics are available, motoring sector insiders say this is a $265 million-a-year industry which is growing at more than 10 per cent per year.

“The market has been growing tremendously,” says Brinal Chua, whose company Autovox specialises in performance tuning, interiors and body-kits mainly for continental brands like Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz and Volvo.

“Between 2001 and 2011, there were some 877,000 cars on the road,” he said. “About half were not tunable. About 20 per cent of the remaining cars were owned by people who did some kind of aftermarket customisation. Today, most premium brands are high tech and tunable.”

EN Vorsteiner GTS-V Kit For BMW 1M Coupe

American tuner Vorsteiner released a new aero kit for the BMW 1M Coupe, hoping to enhance both the car’s visual appeal and aerodynamic efficiency. The GTS-V collection includes front spoiler, rear diffuser, and boot lid. The carbon fiber components work better on the car if it’s white, as seen in the picture and also the video after the jump. The body kit is only part of Vorsteiner’s tuning program for the 1M.

Currently they also offer a set of bolt-on sports exhaust system that adds 15 hp to the output of the car and gives it a deeper soundtrack, and also the new VS-400 wheels collection. The BBS-like rims have a lightweight design and construction to help reduce the vehicle’s unsprung weight, thus enhancing its performance and handling.

EN Mercedes SLS by MEC Design in a Video – Angels Over Berlin

Set in an apocalyptic theme, the video shows the super car Mercedes-Benz SLS in Berlin with all the angels and demons hullabaloo.

The car features its huge lip, which was altered and tuned by MEC Design. The earth-shattering sound of the V8 engine is really something, as the tuner emphasize it and used it as a ‘soundtrack’.

The clip is directed by Daniel Michaelis, and produced by Format67.net.

The video narrated by Claudia Black is beautiful, worthy to be called a film in itself. Although made by a tuning company, we can say that it has great value, so go ahead and watch. The almost 2 minutes you’ll spend doing so will not be a waste.

EN BMW Super Bild Of The Day: M Car Collection

One lucky collector had a hard time making up his mind just which M car he wanted in his prized collection, so he bought and tuned them all. I’ve known “StreetKing” for quite a number of years, and I know both of his weaknesses: white M cars and tuning them.

With a combined 1600+ horsepower from just these three cars, “StreetKing” is fortunate enough to possess not only these three M cars but a very well rounded collection.

Hit the link for more pictures of his garage where these beauties are stored but also more of these three exquisite M cars.

Have an awesome weekend everyone from BMWBLOG.com

What’s all this nonsense about angels and demons, a German front mid-engined supercar and the capital of the aforementioned country.

It’s only the most awesome, awe-inspiring trailer/promo video we’ve ever seen for a tuned car. The flick was directed by Daniel Michaelis and produced under Format67.net. The excellent apocalyptic plot is narrated by Claudia Black.

Most promotional materials for tuned cars feature electronic dubstep music and flash effects, but MEC Design’s Mercedes SLS project went a completely different route. We’re not big fans of the three-piece wheels with a huge lip, but the melodic soundtrack this 6.2-liter V8 produces makes us forgive any such tuning errors.

“Not every angel is terrible. There are good angels and bad angels. One must learn to distinguish. There are angels that stand at the door of the dead. They’ve only come to take us home. Still we fear their company,” Grace Andreacchi says in her poem ‘Angels Over Berlin’ from the poem cycle ‘Berlin Elegies’. How true this is when it also comes to our petrol-burning motoring companions!

EN Volkswagen Apprentices Build 360-hp Golf GTI Black Dynamic for Wörthersee Festival

Volkswagen Golf GTI Black Dynamic

Volkswagen is showing a factory-apprentice-tuned GTI at the annual Wörthersee festival in Austria, an annual celebration of the GTI and all things VW. The GTI Black Dynamic is mostly SEMA-esque fare, so don’t expect to see any of its mods on a factory-built production car.

According to VW, the GTI’s standard 2.0-liter powerplant has been subjected to “engine and gearbox management tuning” and now yields a theoretical 360 hp. (Fortunately, there’s no such thing as torque steer in Fantasyland, where this car will be driven.) Power goes through a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The apprentices installed a larger exhaust system with a 3-inch-diameter pipe as well as an aftermarket K-Sport brake system.

The Black Dynamic’s cosmetic changes are more readily seen. A special “Deep Black Metallic” paint coats the exterior, and is topped with black film trim. The front bumper is borrowed from the Europe-only GTI Edition 35, and the car has been lowered 1.4 inches. Standard rims were swapped out for 19-inchers, and a honeycomb-pattern graphic—the honeycomb has featured on GTI detailing for several generations of the car—appears along the bottom of the doors. Inside, Herr Black Dynamic sports black-and-red seats made of leather and faux suede and handmade GTI lettering on the door panels. Faux suede also coats the headliner and door panels. In the floor of the cargo area, VW’s apprentices plumbed in a vulgar 1800-watt sound system.

It’s not the most exciting Golf that VW has ever tuned, but they can’t all be 434-hp monsters built to race at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.

EN Porsche 918 Supercar: Fine-Tuning a 770-Horsepower Hybrid

Porsche AG
This Porsche 918 Spyder prototype’s paint scheme is a throwback to the company’s famous 917 racing cars of 1970.

Sports-car maker Porsche AG said prototypes of its coming 918 Spyder are on the road. The company is testing the high-performance plug-in-hybrids in part to make sure the electric and gasoline-powered components of their drive trains operate efficiently together.

As it turns out, getting a V8 engine and a pair of electric motors to work together while generating more than 770 horsepower is a challenge. Porsche said it has put “all of our expertise and capacity for innovation.”

The 918 begins with a mid-engine layout that has been a tradition for high-performance sports and racing cars for decades. But it adds electric motors – one driving the front wheels and the other embedded in the drive line and boosting power to the rear wheels.

While the drive system produces staggering power, it is also meant to deliver fuel economy as good as three liters of fuel per 100 kilometers of driving. This translates to 78 miles per gallon, which if true would be more impressive than high horsepower numbers. The car is also expected to accelerate to 60 mph in about three seconds and have a top speed of 200 mph.

The 918 Spyder is planned for production at the end of September 2013, with the first customer deliveries currently scheduled for the United States late in 2013. Expected sticker price: $845,000.

EN Meet the Tuning Parents: R34 and Two R35 Nissan GT-Rs [Video]

GT-R madness has never stopped, despite the fact that prices for this Japanese have steadily crept up across all markets in the part two years or so. There’s a good reason for that and it’s called heritage.

If you ask us, the fifth generation model built under the R34 Skyline name until 2002 is still a very beautiful car. It’s a rare beast that you can never put a fair price on due to every car being a bit different.

In this video provided by Jorrie2, we have two Nissan 25 GT-Rs n the Switzer P800 form, and one classy-looking R35 with a Mines State 2 kit on it. That’s 2,300 horsepower standing side by side in the same shot.

All three cars are tuned bij Total Car Concept, and Jorrie says there are only 3 P800s in the Netherlands, so it’s quite exciting for two of them to be together.

EN Invitation: Time Attack – Hungarian Version, Hungaroring, 20 May

How amateur time trial car racing spreads in Hungary? After a short break, we check in with a new post before the car racing season 2012. As you know, we are about to introduce a wide variety of vehicles from street tuning cars to amateur race cars. We pay attention to the coolest innovations and events where the owners of these prodigies can gratify their passions. In this post, we are going to highlight the popular time trial that is widely adopted all over the world. This is Time Attack. Let’s see the Hungarian version.

Originated in Japan as a proving ground for street tuned cars built by tuning companies. The tuning factories organized the event on race circuits such as Tsukuba Circuit, but Motegi and Suzuka are just as favourable.

The fairly famous Best Motoring tests and race videos (in which cars from different manufacturies are being compared in race circumstancies in 3,5,7 lap races) are shot here. We can select from more than hundred videos on the largest videosharing platform and the variety of car comparison is also huge.

One of my personal favourites is this video

Timing preceding the race and the pilot who runs the worst time wins the pole position. What can be interesting is that cars with different capacity and weight would compete against each other and sometimes the result is suprising.

Certainly, before race the data are being introduced such as weight, horsepower and technical modifications (brake, tire, running gear). This is actually a huge help for the local tuners because the tuning styles are strongly the best in Japan.

Time Attack in Hungary

In 2007 Gábor Fömötör decided to create a fair, clear, uniform tournament given the proper conditions and infrastructure with good atmosphere instead of the obsolate system. The rules and the name have been already known from Japan, Time Attack, where the fastest Hungarian racing cars could be seen by the curious fans.

The top cars are usually built cars, but the competition is divided into different categories, therefore also the lower budget car owners can enjoy the beneficial effect of the adrenalin and the petrol vapour. The timing lasts about 2 hours and 25-30 cars take part actively in the event. The pit is open constantly, thus in order to avoid an accident, 20-25 cars could be on the trace at the same time. That means, every pilot has the right to run as much laps as he can during the 2 hours.

They have to calculate with the ability of the car and the dangerous situtations. The fastest lap counts and the evaluation comes according to this result. It’ possible that the fastest lap does not belong to the most powerful car. The fortitude of a vehicle is very important, but even a weaker car would hit on the circuit if the brake, the tire and the running-gear are choosen properly.

The categories are measured according to weight/ horsepower rate:

Sport category: above 5.5
Pro category : between 4-5.5
Race category: below 4

If anyone uses non-licensed slick street tires or proper adjustable, sport or race running-gear, that is calculated with -0.5 per each modification relating to the weight/ horsepower rate. It is a well-coordinated system. The only wicket is if the owner didn’t admit the actual power of the car.

Even in this case the problem would be solved easily. We have a good relationship with the members of the online automobile clubs. The news get about immediately. When someone sets in an enormous modification everyone gets to know it within hours. This is not a place for fudging.

I would divide the competitors to 2 parts. There are the so called pros, who pay attention to every tiny details and setting. They are visiting driving technique trainings in the hope of mend the pace and break the spacetime record in the race category. In this case, technical knowledge and experience are supporting from the background, this level almost reach the professionals’.

Every question is answered, no matter if it’s tirepressure, temperature or running gear camber. As a beginner, it is worth visiting these events to gain knowledge and improve our skills. Parallel with the drivers mentioned above, there is the group of those who reckon this as a hobby: they don’t take it so seriously, but they can satisfy their needs for speed. This is a good point and opportunity. This mentality doesn’t last long, actually until someone thumb a ride next to a pro driver.

After that he will see the braking manoeuvres, the curves and he will realize how the records could be hit. Another possibility is when a carpartner with the same car choses better tires, and that person runs a 2 seconds better time per lap. Of course the pepper bites the tongue, so sooner or later he will get into the treadwheel, and there is no way back.

It is important in all 3 categories that the cars should own the correct technical specifications before the race in order to stop only for refridgeration after opening the pit stop. Presuming a hot summer day when everything heats up and wears out easily, if the god of technics is on our side as well, a car without mistakes can usually run 20-25 laps in Hungaroring in 2 hours.

Until today, Hungaroring, Pannoniaring and Euro-Ring gave place to the Hungarian Time Attack. This year Slovakia Ring is planned to be registered in the race schedule. We had the opportunity to try the track and I can say without prejudice that the 6 different traces that can be work up hide surprise even for the amateurs. The directors of the Ring wait for the guests with professional attitude.

The question just emerges: why isnt’t there a standing start, the most exciting method of racing? In these videos above, professional pilots test the cars and they take the responsibility for the incidental damage. From this point of view, standing start from the starting rows is not possible of safety reasons.

It is not allowed because of the lack of rollover bar. No matter how experienced a pilot is, no one take the responsibility for a bad stopping distance, curve speed or overtaking manoeuvre damage. On the other hand, these vehicles are the apples of the owner’s eyes, so man cannot  imagine the craziness after a fender –bender.

Getting back to this year, in 2012 the team of www.timeattack.hu and www.tunexcom.org start these events together. Our aim is to support more and more racer-minded fellows to leave the streets, avoid the highway speed races and join the race track.

According to my latest information, Totalcar and Slovakia Ring will come up with something really awesome.

Time schedule is the following:

16.00-17.45 registration, takeover of equipments and transponders
